Changing Careers: How to Make a Successful Career Transition

October 28, 2020, 1:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m. (EDT)
Register
Panelists: Corinne D’Ambrosio and Jessica Hilton
How do you decide if and when is a good time to make a change in your career? And once you decide to make a change (or have that decision made for you), how do you go about it? This session will begin with a discussion of the steps you can take to transition into a new career, with a special focus on academia to industry or research to industry. Then, a panel of AVS members who have made these transitions will share their personal experiences, and engage in a discussion with small groups of attendees. Students, early career and mid-career professionals can all benefit from learning:
  • How to know when it’s time for a change
  • Identifying non-academic positions and career paths
  • Determine what is right for you
  • Tap your professional resources
  • Grow your professional network

Networking During Transitional Times

So you’ve done your homework, and are ready to start moving your career in a new direction. But how do you go about broadening your professional network into this new area? This interactive session will let you practice networking, including how to frame your introduction to maximize your opportunities. Students and early career professionals, as well as those looking to make significant professional transitions, will benefit from this workshop, where they will learn:
  • How to become an insider in your new field (hint: learn the terminology)
  • How to introduce yourself well
  • The secret of successful networking (it’s about the other person)
  • How to make networking easier (practice)
